Help Stop Internet Piracy and Get a Free Hardbound Copy Instructions for Reward Copies of The National Memorial
The Boston Press is offering a free hardbound copy of The National Memorial to readers who provide usable evidence that they were able to download the book in digital form from piracy websites, with or without charge. We will ship the book without charge anywhere in the US to the first twenty or more readers who provide evidence as described below.
These piracy websites are crippling writers and publishers by denying them their modest earnings, by illegally copying their work and selling it or giving it away. We have evidence that over 20,000 copies have been downloaded for free from a few websites, and possibly many times that number. We would like to have more specific examples with signatures of readers. Downloading for your personal use does not violate any law. You can find the illegal websites easily with a web search.
We need snapshot evidence linking the download to sales websites, which offer free copies of many books. Just send us the snapshots and a copy of the digital copy you obtained, and the signed form provided. We will ship your copy within a few days.
To find the piracy websites that offer free downloads, do a web search for “The National Memorial” and “John Barth” in quotes, and skip the book reviews and websites such as Amazon and eBay that offer legitimate copies. The piracy websites offer free downloads.
Here’s how to make the screen snapshots:
1. Choose a temporary folder and make a few blank images. In Windows this is done by right-clicking in the folder and selecting “New-” then “bitmap image” and giving it a name such as “Page 1.” Then open the image in your drawing program such as Windows Paint, by right-clicking the image file and selecting “Open-“ and “Paint.”
2. Select a website from your search results that offers free downloads. The page will usually have a Download or “Read Now” button. Sometimes the Download button goes to a page that demands a payment or subscription. If so, don’t subscribe (unless you wish to download many books), go back and try the “Read Now” button.
3. When you get to the download page, put the cursor over the “URL box” at the top of your browser screen, to display the full web address on the top of your screen. This display is useful but not necessary. While it is shown, press your keyboard “Print Screen” key, which makes a copy of your monitor screen. Then go to the open file with your drawing program, and paste the screen image into the open file. Save and close the file.
4. If the piracy website requires several links to download, it is helpful to make a screen snapshot of each page, with the cursor over the “Next” or “Download” button, showing the next page (or over the URL box on the last page, to show where it came from).
When you have screen snapshots, download or copy the form below. complete and have it notarized (sign it in the presence of the notary), and return to us by mail, and email the screen snapshots and digital copy to us. We’ll send your hardbound copy by mail.
